Rostov Forum for Volunteers, “Peer Education”

Rostov Forum for Volunteers, “Peer Education”

2-3 November 2011: In Rostov-on-Don, the “Peer Education” volunteer forum was organized for the third year running, gathering about 100 participants, who were volunteers and leaders of school teams.

The forum was organized by the Rostov regional youth charity organization “Young Doctors of Don”, comprising Rostov Union’s Children and Youth organizations. It was supported by the Rostov-on-Don administration’s youth department. The forum took place at Gymnasium no. 12 in Proletarian District.

The forum began with the exhibition of youth projects by organizations working to address healthcare issues. Volunteers filled the dance4life information tent, where everyone could test their knowledge on issues including HIV infection and tuberculosis via an interactive quiz. Youth Helpline volunteers shared about the services that they provided, and how these could be applied to adolescents. The exhibition also saw the participation of the “Young Donors of Don” youth movement, “Healthy Planet” and “Sports League Volunteers”.

On the first day of the event, volunteers participated in the “Life Skills” training program, which aimed to impart the necessary skills for building healthy teen attitudes and for encouraging responsible behavior to prevent the spread of communicable diseases. The curriculum included: Learning about interpersonal relationships between boys and girls, the structure of the reproductive system and deliberate pregnancy, contraception methods, sexually-transmitted infections, HIV infections, and the effect of drug abuse on relationships. The program also aimed to empower participants to raise awareness and conduct life skills trainings. In the future, volunteers will carry out similar interactive activities amongst their peers.

The second day of the forum was devoted to developing activism. Volunteers participated in the “Heart Connecting Tour” (dance4life project), visited game booths and filmed several public service announcements. “Connecting Hearts” is an international dance4life project that uses interactive exercises to inspire young people to participate in volunteer activities.

There was also a training program organized for leaders of volunteer teams. A number of speakers addressed them, including representatives from the Federal Drug Control Service, Center for Family Planning and Reproduction Rights, the Don Counter-narcotics Front, and the “Youth Helpline” service. Then, these leaders participated in the planning process of the Rostov “Peer-to-peer” volunteer movement in the 2011-2012 academic year. They suggested a number of possible actions, competitions, seminars and even a summer educational program for volunteers in the format of “Volunteer School”.

At the end of the forum, participants presented the public service announcements that they had prepared, focusing on the problems of alcohol and drug abuse, smoking, attitudes against people living with HIV, and the importance of safe sex and condoms. The volunteers’ knowledge and experience were acknowledged through certificates and relevant records in their personal volunteer books. For the future, all forum members have planned a series of actions, such as educational events for their peers, which aims to promote healthy lifestyles and safe behavior.
